If you stand out on the beaches of Marco Island and scan the coast, you are certain to see a row of glorious vacation rentals right on the beach.
Docks to the water, elegant cottages, and open white sandy beaches coat the entire island. It is a paradise for beach lovers and water enthusiasts.
Few capture the essence of Marco Island better than South Beach. South Beach in Marco Island has every substantial feature you could ask for:
- rolling dunes
- sprawling white sands
- glorious gulf views
- and more.
This is “beach life” distilled to its very best parts, and we couldn’t recommend it enough.
Quiet and Relaxing
South Beach is your best option if you prefer to trade out the “loud and crowded” for the “quiet and relaxing.” Overall, the beaches of Marco Island, Florida do not get especially crowded, even during the peak seasons. That being said, South Beach is known for its especially subdued sands. You won’t find spring breakers lining up here.
The area is less frequented compared to other Marco Island beaches. The two most popular are likely Marco Beach at 176 S Collier Blvd and Tigertail Beach.
Marco Beach is near many high-rise buildings and top-end resorts, which attracts crowds to its beach areas.
Tigertail has numerous features which have garnered it a big following, as well. Visitors have to cross a lagoon to get to the beach proper. It is elegant and remarkable, with exotic bird viewing opportunities and walks down the famous “Sand Dollar Spit.”
Shelling in South Beach
While Tigertail is incredible, South Beach is simpler. It is the purest of the Marco Island beaches. The beach is lined with stunning Sabal palms, giving it that quintessential Florida beach feels. It is also a top spot for shelling. Guests have found some really rare delights during low tide. The South Florida seashell guide can be a really great resource to see what you have found.
You definitely want to avoid any shell which is still alive. For example, brown and wet sand dollars are still alive and well! If the shell is wiggling (a common occurrence if you pick up a healthy urchin or seastar), it definitely should be gently placed back on the sand.
Hours and Parking
South Beach is open from 8 am to sundown. There may be a security guide or two helping to keep the peace. They may monitor closing hours. Your vehicle should be out of the parking lot by sundown.
Parking at the beach is extremely easy. There is an on-site parking lot officially located at 930 Swallow Ave. There is an $8 parking fee for the day, but the lot is located right on the beach and is the most manageable way to get to it.
Linger for Lunch at the Nearby Sunset Grill
South Beach is a wonderful place to spend the day. And you don’t need to leave for lunch. The beach is located right by Sunset Grill. It is one of the top restaurants on Marco Island for seafood, beautiful gulf views, and classic pub grub. It is a really welcoming place to cool down, catch a game, and grab a good burger.
